Spotlight: Academia Sporting in Portugal (Video)






What do Cristiano Ronaldo, Luís Figo, Paulo Futre, and Simão Sabrosa all have in common? If you guessed they're Portuguese soccer players, you're right, but there's one more thing they have in common; they all trained at Academia Sporting in Portugal.



Since opening its doors in 2002, 21 young players that trained here have made it to the A-team, and 41 professionals playing in the Portuguese 1st division came from Sporting. Pretty impressive numbers when you think about it. Want more? It's also home to the professional soccer club, FC Sporting.



Portugal is one of the world's premier training stages for soccer. Its climate is ideal for year-round training and many of the worlds best players come from this small Iberian nation bordering Spain.

Location: Alcochete, Portugal (near Lisbon)

Facilities: The academy is located 40 kilometers outside of Lisbon. Academia Sporting is characterized by its privacy: being situated in a rural area and fully monitored by various security systems. The complex's 250,000 square meters of space are fully monitored by video surveillance and intrusion detection systems. The entrance to the Academy is a private road with a gate operated via a video surveillance system that is permanently manned.
It has 3 natural turf fields, 3 synthetic turf fields, indoor synthetic field, goalkeeper training areas, 2 gyms, Turkish baths, pool, physical therapy clinic, and professional fitness training. 
 
 



Accommodations: Students are housed in on-campus double rooms with 2 players per room. The rooms are equipped with air conditioning, television, a balcony, closet, and bathroom. Chaperones live in the dorms with the players. 
Program: Students can go for a short period or stay for full-time training. All staff is trained and certified by Sporting. Programs are offered on a weekly basis year-round. Full-time students can also go to school during the year while training. Academia Sporting also has facilities that can be rented out. The Academy provides a service of preparation and training for professional teams and staff of all levels from the age of 13 and up.
Level: All levels are welcome from ages 7-16. Students will be placed in groups according to level. Players will train twice a day. 

Extracurriculars: Some of the activities for players include a visit to the stadium and Sporting World, swimming, movie night, karaoke, scavenger hunts, ping-pong and foosball, and an award ceremony.
